Bardo Museum, Tunis

5.0 stars

Mosaics at the Bardo

I spent several hours at the Bardo, a museum of Roman mosaics, Islamic art, and early Christian artefacts housed in the palace of one of the Ottoman envoys who had controlled Tunisia for hundreds of years. The building itself was more impressive than the collection of art, with incredible plasterwork around the walls and in the domes of the ceilings, and original décor and fixtures. The mosaic collection was also very impressive, with huge specimens covering vast floor and wall space, to the point that I experienced mosaic overload. The workmanship was amazing. I personally found the rest of the museum to be forgettable, but it’s well worth the trip to admire the mosaics and the building itself. The Bardo is closed on Mondays, and is open other days from approximately 9.30-16.30, though in the high season it’s open from 9-5. It is well worth the entrance fee and is one of the sight of Tunis which should not be missed! [more ]
