Haight-Ashbury, San Francisco

4.0 stars

In the sixties the Haight-Ashbury was the place to be in SF, well known as a hippie haven. Many great musicians have wandered the Haight and great quantities of trance-inducing, mood-altering, psychedelic drugs have passed through these streets. Most of the musicians are gone, a few are dead, but the drugs you can probably find without much effort. The Haight-Ashbury is worth a visit nonetheless, if only for the cultural experience, good food, and eclectic stores.
I've been down to the Haight many times, and each time is a unique experience. You can find nice clothing stores across the street from second-hand stores, piercing studios, and shops that sell cultural relics and drug paraphernalia. There is also the famous Amoeba Music on the corner next to McDonalds, where you can find any music you desire, used or new, CD or vinyl. I bought my prom dress at a store on Haight street called Ambience, where they have beautiful and classy clothing, but not cheap. Up closer to Ashbury, the Squat and Gobble crepery has lots and lots of varieties of crepes, both savory and sweet.
I always enjoy the Tibetan stores when visiting the Haight, where you can stock up on incense, prayer flags, and OM MANI PADME HUM mantra jewelry.
The diversity of both shops and people on Haight street is something to be relished, and certainly remembered, if you are not from San Francisco. Plus, you can head right over to Golden Gate Park by foot from Haight street and take in the greenery afterwards.
For a real hippie experience, head over to hippie hill where on most days, you will find a drum circle. [more ]
