Carival in an Architectural Jewel of Ecuador

Cuenca is a beautiful city in southern Ecuador (about a 9-hour bus ride from Quito) and a lot of fun, especially during Carnival. In Ecuador, the custom during Carnival is to have a month-long water fight, but in the south this gets taken to extremes. Literally no one is safe from flying water balloons and buckets of water. I’ve even seen a nun get targeted with flying water balloons. The city itself looks like it could have been uprooted from Spain and dropped in South America. The architecture and layout is straight out of the Old World, but with more churches and cathedrals, if that’s possible. Well situated near other attractions and excursions, Cuenca is one of my favourite memories from Ecuador. [more ]
