Cape Town Fish Market, Cape Town, South Africa

 stars
Situated in the Camps Bay Promenade, and offering spectacular views over the beach and of summer sunsets, this branch of the Cape Town Fish Market (CTFM) chain of restaurants would have brilliant atmosphere even if it didn't have any interior decor at all!
That the food lives up to the great atmosphere is a welcome plus. Featuring a vast and varied menu, good value for money and a very impressive wine-list, CTFM is great for an evening of fine dining, or just for a casual dinner. Sushi on demand can be made while you watch. They also offer special chairs for toddlers, which is a great help. Service is friendly and efficient. I couldn't fault this place. [more ]

Cape Town Fish Market Restaurant

Cape Town Fish Market is a seafood chain in South Africa, and they’ve started turning up everywhere! I was very surprised to see one very inland in Stellenbosch, but even more surprised to find one in another city entirely! I think they’re over-priced generally, for example, their sushi seems like good value for money, until you realize the portions are only half the normal size, 3 pieces instead of 6. Despite this, there are some good branches, the one in Camps Bay in particular. It’s located in a strip of very trendy restaurants and bars, but perhaps because it is less trendy it’s never as overcrowded as the other restaurants. Food and service are generally good, but you have to pay more for better food. If you choose a smaller, cheaper meal you’re likely to be disappointed. I’ve tried the vegetable spring rolls (oily and tasteless), and the Thai fish cakes (huge and stodgy, very boring) but splash out on a bigger meal and you’ll be glad you did. There’s a sushi conveyor belt, and the sushi is good if you don’t mind that it’s too expensive. Salads are maybe the best value for money – very big, very fresh and a nice variety. Otherwise just get a couple of drinks and sit there in the cool and look out over the street to the beach and enjoy the view. This is a cool, comfortable location and a nice point to recharge after a few hours on the beach or up the mountain. They’ve tried to conjure up a “Fisherman” type atmosphere, but it’s too upmarket for that to come across. What is interesting is all the photos of old Cape Town, before it became so developed. Lunch and a history lesson in one! And after your meal, you can walk along to Sinnful, the ice cream shop in the same building, for dessert. [more ]
