Salzbergwerk (Salt Mountain works)
This was certainly not what I expected to see or do when I first came to Germany. In fact, I put it off for a few years before I eventually got down to Berchtesgaden and visited my first salt mine. I was very impressed! Actually, if you’re staying in the area for more than four days or so, I would highly recommend a visit to the Salzbergwerk salt mine. Getting there from Salzburg is probably your easiest option, though some try to attempt it as a day trip from Munich. From Munich it’s easily three hours each way, which is why I recommend it from Salzburg, where it’s only about 45 minutes out of town. The mine itself includes a few huge wooden slides, a salt lake deep inside the mountain, and a “train” ride through the mountain...lots of fun all around, I definitely wasn’t expecting it to be as good as it is, a gem of a tour.
