Tian Tan Buddha, Ngong Ping

5.0 stars

Big Budha and monastery

Tian Tan Budha is a very large bronze statue on Lantau Island. There are 268 steps to reach the platform where the Budha sits and a small exhibition inside the statue. The access to Budha is free, but there is an entrance to see the exhibition. You can also purchase a ticket including vegetarian lunch at the nearby monastery, which was what we did.

The Budha statue was very impressive against the surrounding mountains. I did not really find the exhibition interesting, I cannot even remember any of the exhibits. The lunch was lovely and the monastery was definitely worth a look around – tidy, colourful, with flowers and little statues everywhere. [more ]

Tian Tan Buddha, Lantau Island, Hong Kong

The Tian Tan Buddha, also called the “Big Buddha” is a large bronze statue of a sitting Buddha in the hills of Lantau Island. The cable car station that takes you up to the Buddha is very close to the airport (just a short taxi trip away) and the view from the cable car is amazing. You can also walk all the way but bring plenty to drink as it looked like a long walk from up there. I was a bit disappointed to learn that the statue was only completed in 1993, but it is still an amazing sight, and even though I’m not religious it fills you with a kind of awe (not to mention the 268 steps that steal your breath on the way up).
