Tuckerman's Ravine
The big attraction here is the spring skiing that occurs here after the avalanche danger has passed usually some time in May. Tuckerman's Ravine is a spectacular glacial cirque, located on the east side of New Hampshire's Mount Washington that attracts expert skiers from all over the northeast. In late spring the hiking trail is filled with these adventuresome souls making the 2500' ascent to the snowy bowl. The very steep sides of the headwall provide advance to extreme skiing conditions depending on how high one climbs up the the sides of the steep headwalls. It is also a great place to come and watch the skiiers, who in a very snowy year may still be skiing as late as July. Tuckerman's Ravine is also a popular destination well into the fall for hikers , but frequent avalanches in the area make winter travel here very risky. [more] |
