Central Synagogue
Central Synagogue is located VII. Dóhany utca 2 (take M2 Astoria, trams 47, 49, trolleybus 74 or bus 7, 7A or 78). Central Synagogue is the 2nd largest synagogue in the world and it was finished in 1859. It is an landmark in itself and right next to the main building of the synagogue is the Heroes temple that is not open to public. This is where the religious services take place during the weekdays. In the courtyard there is the Garden of remembrance, where the sculpture of weeping willow by Imre Varga serves as a memorial to the victims of Holocaust. Even if you do not plan to actually go into the synagogue do walk around it as you can see the Holocaust memorial from the side street. In one wing of the synagogue itself you can see the moving memorial to all the Jewish Hungarians who were killed during World War II. Opening hours are Mon – Fri from 10:00am until 3:00pm, Sun 10:00am until 1:00pm, closed on Saturdays. [more] |
