Parakeet Cafe review
The Parakeet Cafe on Katoomba Street in Katoomba is a bohemian haven of relaxation. It is a wonderful place to get away from it all.
Retro in design with bright colours to match their parakeet mascot and parrot prints on the walls.
The cafe style sitting in the front gives a great look into the life in the town. The front room the serving bar and tables are arranged for comfortable sitting with one table being set off by itself on a “balcony” like ledge. The second room there are two computers for internet access, couches for leisurely relaxing and leads out onto another private table outside. The courtyard in the back on brick patio away from the street looks onto the alleyway. It is a great area to get away from the hustle and is really quite relaxing. Not many people know it is back here, hallway leading by the toilets, so many times you have it all to yourself.
The newspaper rack sits in front so you catch up on the latest news. There are bookcases of books and soft music playing in the second room.
The kid’s menu is the normal chip offerings, but also has spaghetti and variety of sandwiches. The adult menu is light sandwiches, great salads and pasta selections. They serve breakfast or lunch and have nice Primo coffee. There is also a great selection of loose teas to choose from. They have gluten free an vegetarian items on the menu to choose from. Entrees run from $4.00 to $9.00 and mains are from $7.50 to $5.50 with a variety of desserts displayed on the front counter. Specials are listed on the wall and front.
For the families, there are highchairs and a changing area. They are also breastfeeding friendly establishment.
Prams and wheelchairs are accessible everywhere but the front and back patios. One is too small and the other has four steps.
Opening hours are Monday 10:30-5:00, closed Tuesday, Wednesday to Friday 10:30-5:00, Saturday and Sunday 9:00-6:00.
They are licensed for BYO so you can bring a bottle of wine to kick back with. Parking is behind the cafe up the alley in the Coles/Kmart lot on along the street. The train station is just up the road and it sits on the bus and trolley routes.
I love to take a seat on the couch with my mocha and read the paper or just sit back and listen to the music. When my family comes we go to the back patio so not to disturb anyone with Aussie vs. Yank arguments between hubby and son and privacy. [more ]
