Wat Phra Kaew -Temple of the Emerald Buddha
Wat Phra Kaew or Temple of the Emerald Buddha is considered the most important Buddhist temple in Thailand. Located right in the heart of Bangkok, in the Grand Palace grounds, it´s home to the Phra Kaew Morakot (the Emerald Buddha), a magnificent Buddha image carved in a single jade. The Emerald Buddha dates from the 15th century and is in meditating position. The structure was superb and the detailed walls simply exquisite. There were guides around the temple in the morning hours. Also available Personal Audio Guides (PAG) in many languages. As this was a sacred place a dress code was implemented so flip-flops,sandals, shorts or revealing clothing was not allowed inside the Wat. Wat Phra Kaew
After being properly dressed at the entrance, we proceed through the grounds of the Grand Palace to Wat Phra Kaew, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. The Buddha is actually made of jade, and is one of the holiest objects in Thailand. The statue is over almost 600 years old and is dressed in one of three costumes depending on the season (summer, winter, or rainy season). The temple itself is very impressive; the Buddha statue is elevated above the floor of the temple by gold scaffolding and surrounded by impressive murals and scenes depicting the life of the Buddha. Wat Phra Kaew is technically a monastery, although no monks actually live here. The rest of the complex houses a variety of official buildings, including the ordination hall, the throne room and reception hall, as well as a variety of gardens and statues. The Grand Palace itself is closed to tourists, but several of the smaller buildings used for coronation ceremonies and audiences were impressive enough in themselves. [more] |
