Living in a Hutong
Hutongs are traditional Chinese alleyways of community living in courtyard residences. The Beijing Hutongs are a cultural heritage listed on the sight-seeing map. People take rickshaws and romanticize the poverty. As it happened, while I was in Beijing for two days I stayed with an English expatriate who was living in an, er, modest one-room house in a hutong. It couldn’t have been a more authentic experience with the community bathrooms, bicycle transportation, congee for breakfast and dinner and joint family courtyards. My Brit friend was living like a true Chinese, managing to save money, and feeling completely at home. For me, two days was quite enough, but living in a hutong has been one of my most valuable experiences. [more] |
