A Simple Reason to Come Back
The great thing about Tapsi is that it’s the vampire among bars in the sense that it lures the innocents and primes them for corruption. This joint is a great venue for meeting new and interesting people. Most of which are musicians in bands, striving artists looking for inspiration, and young students who want to get away from all the stress. I personally know people who consider Tapsi their home away from home. Its relaxing atmosphere is THAT powerful that you want to stay there as often as you can. And being the vampire among bars, who could resist its irresistible drawl that calls anyone fortunate enough to pass by the place to relax, chill out, and grab a beer? I see no reason to not come back to this place. I you visit Tapsi, I’m sure you’ll agree with me and will just keep coming back for more, too. [more] |

All Kinds of Meals Available Here
Rice meals, sizzling meals, finger foods, and “pulutan” or bar chow—these are your food choices in Tapsi. They don’t seem much but when you’re chilling out with a bunch of friends over some cold booze in between smoking your lungs out and swapping stories about each other’s latest misfits, trust me, those foods are all you’ll need. Of course, with the vast student populace in mind, Tapsi cooked up a menu with student-friendly prices. The must-trys in this eatery are: sizzling sisig, cheese lumpia, and clawing “kambing” (goat) for the adventurous, risky type of eaters; chicharon and kropek for the big groups; chicken teriyaki and tapsilog for the heavy eaters; and Barbecue and peanuts for the thrifty spenders. A Good Location Or Not?
Finding a good place to chill at in Manila is really easy; that is, if you know where to go. And, that is why I am here. Tapsi is located in Sampaloc, Manila—a place that is not recommended for innocent-looking people. Let’s just say that the crime rate here is the reason for that. But, like what I’ve always been saying, every risk will be worth it when you taste the food. I’m not saying that you risk your life just to get to Tapsi. You can let go of your worries and be at peace because the place is surrounded by Police stations. Plus, there are lots of people who go to this place and most of them are students since Tapsi is located at the back of the University of Santo Tomas (which is the oldest university in Asia, by the way). For me, Tapsi is an escapist’s surreal haven with its dream-like sublime motif. It feels as if all your problems could be dissolved by that golden elixir locals call beer. Strangely enough, it keeps giving me that same effect every single time I get inside; the magic seemingly never wears out no matter how many times I visit the place. [more] |

There’s Something about Tapsi
Craving for that adventurous and even reckless desire for something new? Then try this place I’ve just discovered. It’s called Tapsi, coined from Tapa or sweet beef strips and Sinangag or garlic fried rice. Now, here in the Philippines, Tapsi is a common name for any old and dingy eatery that serves that kind of food. But this recently explored joint is a diamond unearthed among piles of coal in an abandoned mine. It was a chance discovery and a very fortunate one at that. What exactly makes me go wild about this place? Some restaurants, it’s the music. Mostly it’s about the food. But Tapsi here is different; it’s all about the ambience. I have never been to a place that tantalizes me so much to order a beer that I could not resist, until I stumbled upon Tapsi. So if you’re itching for a brew and your buddies aren’t in the mood for one? Take them here and change their minds. [more] |

How to get there safely
To get to Tapsi, you must know how to get to the University of Santo Tomas or UST, and that is not an easy feat. If you are familiar with the Taft Avenue, just get a jeepney going to España. Don’t worry; most jeepneys have “UST” placards in the windshield. If you’re coming from the northern area like Quezon City, you can always ride a “Philcoa” jeep. The driver will drop you off in Philcoa and from there, get another jeepney going to Quiapo or España. Aside from jeepneys, you can also hail an FX which is another mode of transportation in the city. A cab is a good idea if you want to avoid hassles, but I don’t really recommend it because it’s expensive. Once you’re in UST, just walk to Asturias street and there, Tapsi is ready for you to drink all your stress away. [more] |
