Houhai Lake, Beijing

4.0 stars

Houhai -Nicest place to have a stroll in Beijing

Houhai is a newly developed old town of Beijing and named after the Houhai Lake which it encircles. It was once a very quite area, but now is the new hot spot for Beijing's night life. It houses a variety of teahouses, cafes, bars and boutiques that bears Chinese atmosphere. The buildings and hutongs there right represent the old Beijing style, giving you a sense of history and culture. It’s a folksy place, you will find beautiful traditional Chinese crafts (like embroidery, paper cutting and calligraphy) from time to time.

I recommend you go to visit in the afternoon, as you can rent a pedal boat to row in beautiful Houhai or rent a rickshaw to see around hutong. After that, you can take a stroll around the lake in dusk, find a lakeside restaurant and then enjoy the great night view of Houhai.

Note: Houhai area is also called Lotus Market, so if you take taxi, you can tell driver to drop you at Houhai or Lotus Market. [more ]

Late night bar-hopping at Houhai Lake

There are about a 100 little bar/restaurants around the Houhai lake in Beijing, an excellent opportunity for pub hopping. It’s authentic, the masses hang out here, there’s an immense variety of bars and the walk around the lake it pleasant and festive and alive, especially at night.
I happened to be in Beijing during the World Cup, so the atmosphere around the lake was especially electric. The fact that the people I was with were a mixed bunch of expats from different parts of the world, each supporting a different team, made it even more interesting.
We started with kebabs and beer at a small local open air restaurant and then hopped various bars looking for a good telly and other football fanatics. Needless to say, I lost track of how many and which bars we visited after the first few. The last thing I remember was that it was about 2am and somebody beat somebody in the match that night. Yandaixie jie- Hutong hideaway in Houhai

Yandaixiejie is a kind of back street, a hutong hidden in beautiful Houhai lake. It well represents a sense of Chinese history and culture. Strolling along this hutong, you seem be back to old Beijing. This is well preserved hutong in Beijing which no modern touch can be felt, but all historical trails. This narrow street lines many craft stores, Qiaopao (traditional clothing of Chinese women in old China), souvenir shops and some creative art stores.

There are some nice bars in Yandaixie jie, but better to chose those who have rooftop terrace, where you can enjoy the nice and panoramic view of Houhai lake. I recommend you visiting at evening when colorful lights glittered over the lake, the view is really nice. [more ]
