Michael White, the Blue Mountains artist
Michael White Art Gallery in Leura, NSW is situated in the alley behind the Post Office Restaurant. It contains exhibits of his original oils mostly painted on linens, prints and now also has some hand blown glass by Hoglund Art Glass. He is open from 10:30-4:30 and closed on Tuesday and Wednesdays.
White is from the Blue Mountains, born and raised, and began painting at a early age. He loves his bushland home and represents it well. He is self-taught, feeling as if he had no choice but to paint and that it comes through him.
Most of his work is landscapes painted out in natural light with bold colours and mostly abstracted. Although one of the piece that intrigues me most is the Woman in Sarong, the only piece I know of that he has done of a person. I have seen his pieces all over the mountains in restaurants and homes.
Most of his pieces are of his beloved Blue Mountains, but he did take a trip to the US in 2006 to capture scenes from the American Southwest – New Mexico, Colorado and Arizona. They are different in size but he mainly works in oil.
He has had several solo exhibitions and taken part in a number of group exhibitions during the past 15 years. His paintings hang in private collections throughout Australia as well as the UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand, Germany, France, Switzerland, The Netherlands, Denmark, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Dubai.
