Gaisano Mall, not what it used to be!
For two years now we, (my family), have had bad experiences at the Gaisano mall in Butuan. I have searched for days trying to find the right place to lodge a complaint with the Corp. that own/operates that mall to no avail. I did manage to find several articles in the Sun Star on line about the Gaisano malls. I am writing this not only because I am upset, but also to warn others about the situation in the Gaisano mall Butuan City, Northern Mindanao. The situation over the past year has been bad and this last trip to the mall, April 13, 2009 was unbearable! The beggars and thieves harass the patrons while they park their cars, exit their cars to walk to the front doors of the mall, and then again when they depart the mall with bags in hand. This last trip, as I approached my vehicle, 4 beggars surrounded my wife and me while 3 others had the car staked out! Bumping and shoving, I could not even open my doors to get in without having to yell at them and physically move them aside! This is unacceptable and terrible for all patrons. I will certainly pass on this information to any and all that care to listen and especially those that shop Gaisano Malls... SM, Makro, and Robinson’s all have armed guards to not only admit patrons to the mall interior but also keep the rift raft out of the parking areas and prevent them from harassing those that shop there. I have read, thanks to the on line Sun star that ATM thieves are there stealing pin numbers (no guard), stolen cars, vandalism, and beggars physically harassing patrons of the mall. Anyone considering a shopping trip to Butuan should think twice about shopping at the Gaisano Mall there!! Something must be done and done soon or they will be closing down the Gaisano mall within two years, especially when SM opens a Mall there next year. I for one will not shop there again until I hear personally from someone at Gaisano informing me that the situation has been corrected! This problem ties into the articles on line at the Sun star regarding car napping problems, the ATM problems, and the vandalism problems that are constant there. There just seems to be a mob of thieves and beggars pushing and shoving patrons in the parking areas. Almost two years ago, a 5-year-old child died falling from the 3rd floor and just this past weekend another child, a 4 year old, has fallen from the same floor and is in critical condition as I write this. Gaisano has chosen not to correct the balcony problems, I don't think they care and should be held in Negligence! This mall is not safe inside or out! I would register a formal complaint with the Gaisano Company, but they have chosen not to make a customer feedback site available like SM and Robinson Malls!!! [more] |

Department Store and Movie Theater
Though the mall still has room for improvement when it comes to its air conditioning facilities, Gaisano Butuan has the basic fares that you would expect in a mall. Aside from its array of familiar fast food chains and affordable boutiques, the mall houses four movie theaters located beyond the toy section of the department store. Similar to the grocery area, Gaisano Butuan's department store also is well segregated, with the apparel and household item sections covering the lower floors of the mall. A tip: if you are raring for some t-shirts and souvenirs, I suggest you head to the apparel section where a souvenir kiosk is located. [more] |

Grocery Shopping
Buying stuff in Gaisano Butuan's supermarket area can be as enjoyable as in a very fancy mall. The mall's grocery is well segregated so people would have no sweat finding what they need in the first place. The supermarket area is quite large, with the imported and local goods separated by the counters. When I went shopping, I was able to buy some items at more or less the same, reasonable prices. Even more impressive for a provincial establishment this side of town, the supermarket area has its own loyalty card. The service people here are friendly, too, so it's no wonder that many foreigners (together with their Filipino spouses or friends) frequent the grocery area. [more] |

Old But Charming
Even though Gaisano Butuan covers a relatively smaller area than the usual mall and its parking lot is not that large, its height or number of floors is enough to accommodate stores that keep people coming back. Currently, Gaisano Butuan has four or five levels, including the basement part. This is not to say, however, that the mall has a lot of fancy and classy boutiques; in fact, do not expect the mall to have one, at least at this point in time. If I may say so, Gaisano Butuan's forte lies in its supermarket/grocery area, which is located on the ground level, and in its department store, which occupies all the upper floors of the mall. Gaisano Butuan
If you happen to be in Butuan city, this side of the Agusan province, then you might like to drop by Gaisano Butuan. Located along the main highway, beside a popular fast food chain, this mall is probably one of the pioneer leisure places in Butuan, with its familiar feel and array of quick service stores and restaurants. Though the building is quite old, the place seems to be always teeming with people, even on weekdays when you would not normally expect the mall to be full of life; when I was there on several occasions, the mall was packed. Indeed, even during these modern times, Gaisano Butuan still retains its charm, both to local and foreign tourists who happen to be in the city. [more] |
