Parc de la Ciutadella, Barcelona

Stone Mammoth in the park

Walking through the Parc de la Ciutadella, we came upon a seemingly incredibly random statue - a statue of a giant stone mammoth. It is between La Cascada and the larger lake right off the pathway. It's a popular place to take pictures. You can sit on it's trunk.

The statue was built as part of a project spearheaded by Barcelona native Norbert Font i Sagué who was a writer, speleologist and a geologist in the late 1800's and early 1900's. He wanted to recreate, in stone, a number of extinct species of animals. I'm not sure if any others got created, but the stone mammoth in the Parc de la Ciutadella is memorable. [more ]

La Cascada arch and fountain

La Cascada is a Baroque fountain with a triumphal arch on top in the northern corner of the Parc de la Ciutadella. It is indeed a triumphant structure. The baroque structure was built in 1888 and was inspired by the Trevi Fountain in Rome. It took over 5 years to complete and is made of marble and stone.

There are staircases on both sides of the arch giving a central view out over the pond and waterfall. There is a horse drawn chariot at the top of the arch and statues and sculptures everywhere. It's a beautiful architectural gem in the park.

It's a great place for pictures, to grab lunch, to sit and people watch. Just a beautiful place. [more ]

Parc de la Ciutadella - The Citadel Park

Located in the center of Barcelona, the Parc de la Ciutadella is over 70 acres of pathways, attractions, orange trees, a lake and more. It's a well-known park, bordered by Passeig de Pujades, Passeig de Picasso, Carrer de Wellington, and Passeig de la Circumval-lacio.

Originally the park was the site of Europe's largest fortress in the 1700's as King Felipe V of Spain sought to keep the area under control. In the 1800's, the citadel was demolished with only a few buildings still remaining.

There are a number of popular tourist attractions in the park, from statues to museums to fountains, and it would be a mistake to not take a stroll through the grounds. [more ]

Parc de la Ciutadella and the Cascada

Parc de la Ciutadella is one of the greates parks in the center of this beautiful city on the place where there was once a military fortress. The park features several important sights including the parliament of Catalunya and the zoo, but the real reason that it is tdefinitely worth visiting is the great fountain – The Cascada. This is one of the greatest fountains in the world, there are so many different parts and it is so beautifully built. There are different arches, animals, stairs and everything makes such a beautiful combination. I didn’t expect that Barcelona will surprise me so much also with its fountains, buth both this one and the one in front of Palau Nacional are really worth seeing. [more ]

Parc de la Ciutadella

Parc de la Ciutadella got its name after the old military citadel that once used to stand here, in fact you can see a good number of buildings that are still here and in fact are being used the Governor's Palace, the former arsenal that is the home of the Catalan parliament nowadays. If you have been following my tips you probably know I love my parks and markets and this truly is a beautiful and relaxing park to take a stroll and enjoy your surroundings. There are beautiful trees that will offer you shade in case you visit during the hot summer months (it can get really and I mean really hot in Barcelona), there is a wonderful waterfall, pond and flower gardens.
