Huge dorm-like hostel

 stars
Our first stop on our trip across Europe was Dublin. We stayed at Avalon House, which is apparently one of the top hostels in Europe. There was nothing particularly wrong with it: it was clean, it had a nice social space, the free breakfast was really good (homemade strawberry jam... mmm!) the beds were comfortable and there were a lot of showers.... but I really missed the social aspect.

It's entirely possible that we were there at the wrong time, but in most hostels I've stayed in, people are very social and looking to meet new friends. The people who I met who were staying there were a lot of families, and we didn't really meet anyone.

The staff, however, were quite helpful and pointed us towards most of the activities we found in Dublin. We hadn't planned much of anything, and it was thanks to them (and the posters that were left in the lobby) that we had such a good time in the city, if not in the hostel itself. [more ]

Avalon House in Dublin

 stars
Avalon House in Dublin is one of the city's most popular hostels. When we were there, there were plenty of students and young people as well as some families.

We stayed in a shared room. There were 6 bunk beds on the lower level and there was an upper level (spiral staircase and all!) that had 4 bunk beds. There was a shared bathroom down the hall. The shower was pretty cold, but it wasn't too bad. To get in the hostel after a certain time, you need your key card, but it's not ever closed.

There is a game room with a billiards table. There is free breakfast each morning. The earlier you come down, the more likely you are to have a good place to sit. The food never ran out. The coffee was decent. There were a mix of juices and some fruit. The main dish, as it were, was bread and jam. Plenty of jam options to choose from!

The staff are friendly and knowledgeable. [more ]
