Riva (Split's promenade)
One thing you cannot miss in Split is the promenade or as the locals call it Riva. This is the place to see and be seen no matter what time of the year it is. Although I did have coffee in some of places on Riva, I would recommend only a walk here and having coffee behind the Split’s National Theater – much better there. Riva got the shape it has today some 2 centuries ago, during the French. On the east tip there is the port and the ferries while on the Western part you can see a part of Diocletian’s Palace as well as Franciscan monastery. Since no cars are allowed this is a great place to have a walk, see what people are wearing and have a drink. Plus this is the place where all the big festivities take place – for example the festival of St. Duje and the like. The harbor and ferry port is not too far away that explains the smell a bit.
