The Czartoryskis’ Museum
The Czartoryskis’ Museum is located at Sw. Jana 19.
Now this museum is worth visiting if for nothing else then for its star exhibit which in this case is Leonardo da Vinchi’s Lady with the Ermine. It is only one of the 6 museums is the world that has a da Vinchi painting.
It is also said it is the first modern portrait. The story behind the museum is that is represents the collection of Czartoryski family and they were temporarily moved to Paris to avoid the Russian army in 19th century and then returned back to Krakow.
Most impressive to me was the Gallery of the European painting with the famed Da Vinchi and Rembrandt, but there are other things to explore as well such as Armory and the Gallery of the Antiquities. All in all it was an afternoon well spent.
Opening hours are Tuesdays from 10:00am until 4:00pm; Wednesdays from 10:00am until 7:00pm; Thursdays from 10:00am until 4:00pm; Fridays and Saturdays from 10:00am until 7:00pm and on Sundays from 10:00am until 3:00pm. [more]
The Czartoryski Museum
Maybe this is the second place to visit after taking a trip to Auschwitz. It will help you forget a bit about the bitter taste of the concentration camps. There is art to be seen around here somewhere. Perhaps behind Da Vinci’s painting: “Lady with an Ermine” or in one of Rembrandt’s canvases you can find the inner peace of the perfect holiday you were hoping for. Pictures are allowed but without flash. It is harmful especially to the paintings. The museum is not as complex as the Hermitage or the Louvre but it does share its masterpieces and bits and pieces of history. [more]
