Amoeba Music, San Francisco: best record store in the world

Situated at the end of Haight Street (near the park) Amoeba Music is basically a converted bowling alley filled to the brim with every sort of music imaginable. It was voted "The Best Record Store in the Country" by the SF Chronicle 2001-2005, and when I went in 2007 it was due to pick up another award. These days, I feel that too many people rely on amazon and eBay, so it’s good to see a place where you can go and flick through some records for a couple of hours. As I said, they’ve got all sorts of records: small independent punk bands; out of print drum and bass; limited edition vinyl; cheap stuff; expensive stuff; big stuff; small stuff. Chances are, if you can’t find what you’re looking for – it doesn’t even exist.

Amoeba have two more stores in Berkeley (where it all started) and Hollywood (The World's Largest Independent Music Store). [more ]
