Just one day at this Museum will not do justice to its collection. No way. You need lots of time to go through the gorgeous museum fully. The first Government-sponsored Museum in the country, it opened in Chennai in 1851. It is housed in the Pantheon Complex, which gives the road that lines up in front, its name. Its collection of Bronzes and Buddhist antiques is among the best. Especially impressive are the Arms gallery, its pre-historic collection, its philatelic collection, its antique jewellery and the musical instruments collection. The museum has an auditorium of its own, which is beautiful and has some of the best acoustics among Chennai auditoriums. All the buildings inside the museum grounds are old and very intricate. Like most tourist places in Chennai, the museum is closed on Sundays. [more] |
