The clock tower
The clock tower is of of the main tourist attractions of Bern. It was the main gate of the city. Later on the Kaefigturm was built, as the second city gate. The Zytglogge, or the Clock Tower was built during the 12th century, but it was destroyed at the beginning of the 1400s. It was rebuult again and turned into a women prison. The clock is astronomical, but I don’t really know how it works. Apart from that, the mechanism that starts working every hour with the lovely animal figures is really interesting. Anyway, the Clock Tower is a definite landmark of Bern and I really recommend visiting it. It lays in the Marktgasse, which is a lovely plaza. [more] |
