Caterina Hostel
Travel light if you're going to Caterina Hostel. Perched three flights up a rather large marble staircase within an apartment building, there are no elevators. However, it's a great way to work off the calories from those pesky Sopronis at night. This is a great hostel: clean, safe, spacious, with a friendly staff and great clientele. They provide a complimentary breakfast in the morning and have a kitchen for use if you want to stay in (there's also a grocery store nearby). The staff is very helpful and full of tips for restaurants and bars, as well as information on what Budapest is like and who the Hungarians are on a personal level. The people who stay here are a diverse mix (families often stay in one of the smaller rooms, students in the large dorms). Everyone we met there (and there were people coming and going rather frequently) were very nice and trustworthy. We wound up going out in groups a few nights in a row and got along very well. If you want to go and do your own thing, that's okay, too. But if you're traveling solo or with a mate and are looking to meet new people along the way, I heartily recommend Caterina.
