Hotel Annalena
Staying in the Hotel Annalena feels like staying in an extension of the Bargello Museum. In true Italian fashion, the building itself has a history that any member of the staff will divulge at will. A former Medici residence, the palazzo housed Baldaccio dei Medici, his young bride Annalena, and their son, Guido. Typical of these stories, Annalena's beauty captured the heart of more than a few locals, including Bartolomeo Orlandini. Upon the chaste Annalena's refusal, Orlandini murdered her husband and child, leaving Annalena alone and half-mad. She then converted the house into a convent which then became a house for young widows, a school for young girls and finally a pensione for travelers. With all of this history behind it, the Hotel Annalena is one of the most charming places to stay in Florence (and reasonably priced; single rooms run from 70€ to 114€ depending on season). An easy walk to the Ponte Vecchio (which connects to the main attractions of the city, including the Duomo and museums), Annalena is in a more residential area of Florence making for a nice alternative to the tourist-crowded hotels on the other side of the Arno river. The rooms are well worth it, too. They recapture the romance and the thrill Annalena must have felt when she moved into the large house. The floors range from marble to tile (bring slippers or socks in the colder months), the walls surprise with a burst of fresco in one corner or a painting above the bed. There is good light on all sides of the hotel, which also features a wraparound terrazzo that overlooks the neighboring Boboli gardens. The hotel (like many Italian hotels) is on the second floor of the residential building (with an impressive foyer and staircase). A buffet breakfast is included and the staff is very accommodating—be sure to get their recommendations for lunch and dinner as they have inside connections to the best trattoria in the city. To get a truly Italian experience, Annalena is as quintessential as a pizza margherita and a Puccini aria.Hotel Annalena - Via Romana, 34 - 50125 FlorencePh. 39 055 22.24.02http://www.hotelannalena.it [more] |
