Hotel Flex, Hiroshima
The Hotel Flex in Hiroshima may have an odd name, but it proved to be a great place to stay as a backpacker in the middle of the city. Located at 7-1 Kaminobori-cho, across one of the main river bridges in Hiroshima, and just a mile or so away from Hiroshima Station, this was more of a hotel than a hostel, but with cheap in-house laundry service, lockable, private rooms with air conditioning, private bathrooms with bath and shower and a remarkable view, I was one happy traveler. Priced at only ~4000 yen per person (about $45 dollars per night), the hostel was a little expensive, but in this case I reserved late, and had to stick with what was available. Price-wise, I don’t think I could have made a better choice. The hotel was only a block or so away from the trolley that traveled all over town, and even closer to a variety of convenience stores and cafes. Hotel Flex is also only a mile from the shopping district, so guests can stay out into the evening and still get back in time. Since it is technically a hotel, there is no curfew and breakfast, lunch and dinner are available at the connected restaurant, with room service options for travelers who aren’t on a budget. The only downside to the hotel was the slightly stuffy attendants, who needed far too many pieces of i.d. and wouldn’t watch my belongings as I prepared my paperwork for the room. It almost seemed as if tourists were a rare occurrence at the hotel, even though I reserved my room using an international hostel website. Once the reservations were set, however, it was fairly easy to avoid the attendants and have a quiet and peaceful stay. If you’re staying in Hiroshima for only a day or two and want to be right in the middle of things, I highly recommend the Hotel Flex. Just make sure you’ve got plenty of i.d.! [more] |
