Wave Hostel, Rio de Janeiro

4.0 stars

'Wavey' hostel

Wave Hostel, or 'Wavey' hostel as it's pronouced by Portuguese speakers, is one of Copa's better hostelling options. (As long as you're not looking for a quiet life...). The location, close to Cantagalo metro station and a couple of blocks from the beach, is good, and there's a lively atmosphere. it's a very popular spot with Israeli travellers. but attracts quite a few Brazilians too. The shared toilets could be cleaner, to be honest, but prices are reasonable - Wave also owns a smaller, more expensive hostel in Ipanema. [more ]

Escape the crowds at Laranjeiras

Most tourists simply pass through the middle class neighbourhood of Laranjeiras on their way to the Christ Statue, but it's well worth taking the time to explore this pleasant, leafy suburb. Rents that are cheaper than much of the Zona Sul have led to some interesting independent bars and restaurants, as well as possibly Rio's hippest nightclub - Casa Rosa. Casa Rosa sits high on a hill in a pink house (hence the name) that was formally a brothel, but whose chequered past is now long forgotten by the in-the-know Cariocas who gather here at weekends to dance to live samba and eclectic DJ sets. Elsewhere in the neighbourhood, you'll find nice, simple little pavement bars and botequins, as well as the beautiful Palacio das Laranjeiras (Laranjeiras Palace) and the green, pleasant Parque Guinle. For the best bars and restaurants, head for Rua Alice, where you'll find a cluster of pleasant spots to linger over cold beers and nibbles. [more ]

Chilling at the lighthouse

On a pretty little gated side street just three blocks back from Ipanema beach, Lighthouse hostel is in a cute terraced house whose modern furnishings give the hostel the impression of somebody's hip town house. There are dorm beds from R$35 and doubles from R$100, and the staff here go out of their way to be helpful and accomodating. The small size of the hostel means that facilities are basic - there's no bar, pool tables, pool etc, but the street is shared with a dozen or so other hostels which lends the area outside a very friendly vibe and a party atmosphere. The location couldn't be better, and if you're looking for a place within easy reach of the beach as well as some of Ipanema's liveliest bars, restaurants and nightclubs, you can't go wrong with the Lighthouse Hostel. Wave Hostel

Throw a stone from Ipanema and Copacabana beaches and you´ll hit either one of the two Wave Hostels in Rio. They´re so close to the beach, taking cash or valuables simply isn´t an issue. Just throw on a sarong and away you go! Surf and body boards are available for hire, but it´s hard to find the waves. There are predominantly beach breaks with the occasional offshore rip. Both hostels have an outdoor area, kitchen, communal TV, internet access and friendly staff, who make startlingly good caipirinhas! The rooms are a bit small, but you won´t be in them long with bustling beaches and crazy nightlife on your doorstep. Copacabana Wave Hostel is one for the locals and internationals on Travessa Cristiano Lacorte Street 46 off Rua Miguel Lemos (2227 1846) whereas Ipanema is mainly internationals only on Rua Barão da Torre (2227 6458). Dorms range upwards from 30R, breakfast is included. [more ]

Wave Hostel - Copacabana and Ipanema

Refreshed by a couple of icy beers, we headed of to meet our British friend at the Copacabana branch of Wave Hostel. This is a fairly new hostel for the city, having opened only in 2006, but I was familiar with its sister hostel in Ipanema. The Copacabana branch is in a less scenic location but much bigger, with over 50 dorm beds, friendly staff and plenty of indoor and outdoor space for lounging. The outdoor patio with sunshade was the perfect spot to enjoy - yes, you guesses it - a couple more drinks before heading for Ipanema and, we hoped, the British pub Lord Jim. [more ]
