Tuptim Thai Cuisine in Ann Arbor
Tuptim Thai Cuisine is a favorite restaurant for many folks in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti, Michigan, but it does have mixed reviews depending on who you ask. Diners can find Tuptim Thai at 4896 Washtenaw Avenue. Tuptim Thai can be contacted at (734) 528-5588. It is open Sunday from 12:00pm to 9:00pm, Tuesday from 5:00pm to 9:30pm, and Wednesday through Saturday from 11:00am to 9:30pm. They are closed on Mondays. As an FYI, it is higher-priced than Banh Na Restaurant (see earlier posting) and a splurge option in my humble budget-minded student-oriented opinion. For those people familiar with the Long John Silver’s restaurant chain, Tuptim Thai is in one of their old buildings. While the outside architecture still looks a bit like Long John Silver’s, the inside is repainted and redecorated. The space is small, though, for the amount of diners that visit the place each day. Definitely call ahead if you have a large party. The wait can take some time. An alternative is takeaway/carry-out. I appreciated the menu variety. For example, there are different curry choices such as Panang, Massuman, Red, and Yellow. Instead of using yogurts as is traditional in many South Asian curries, Thai cuisine often uses coconut milk. This gives dishes a different kind of richness (not to mention calories, but that’s another story!). One colleague did complain that his curry was too watered down, though, so taste is a matter of perspective. Another didn’t like how sweet some of the food was for her palate. Because I am a creature of habit, I tend to go for the Pad Thai Noodles dish. It’s tasty, but not the best ever. The Thai iced teas are pretty good, too.
