Great old-school bar
Bar Armazines do Thiago has to be one of my favourite bars in Rio. Located on Largo do Guimaraes, the pretty cobbled square in boho Santa Teresa, this is a real old-school bar that has been here since 1919. The walls are covered with newspaper clippings about the bar´s history, and glass display cabinets show the many types of aged cachacas that are available here. Prices are on the low side of average for drinks, and average for food - there are full meals available, but if you just want a pestisco (snack) such as olives or fried cod and potato balls, you can just order them standing up at the bar. The service here is friendly, the toilets are nice and clean, and there´s no impression of this being a tourist trap - whenever I´ve been in it´s been full of locals chatting away over a beer or cachaca.
