Jazz on the Park Hostel, good location, hard to sleep

The positive thing about this hostel is its closeness to Central Park and a subway connection. However, there are a lot of negatives things I experienced while staying here. My room was extremely hot, it was almost impossible to sleep. The air felt stale and was sweating from the heat. This was even during winter time. Another unfortunate occurrence was the loud people who kept coming into the room during the early morning. Lastly, the continental breakfast was just coffee and a bagel. In order to avoid getting a room that will make sleeping difficult, reserve your room well in advance. The price for the 10 bed room is the same as the 14 bed room.

Inside the hostel, they keep to a Jazz theme by displaying pictures of old Jazz legends like B.B. King. The hostel was usually clean, as well as the toilets which were also kept to a pretty good standard of cleanliness. If you feel like just taking a break, the Hostel also features a coffee shop with student prices and good coffee. The staff was also very friendly and helpful in telling us where we should go in New York. When coming back to the Hostel late at night, make sure that you get off at the right subway stop. Getting off one station later means that you will end up in Harlem. I have seen some pretty strange things there like people getting pushed into the subway tracks. On the other side, a lot of people have been moving to Harlem as the prices as less expensive there and the place is slowly becoming less dangerous. [more ]
