Getting To the Indian River Lagoon Park
I'm a local and I must admit it's a little bit difficult to locate the Indian River Lagoon Park in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. The park is about 1.87 miles south of the intersection of Saxon Drive and 3rd Avenue (South Causeway). There's a signalized intersection (2nd one when heading east off the South Causeway) with a CVS pharmacy on the southwest corner. That's where Saxon Drive kicks in. Turn right (south) onto Saxon Drive and head on down the road past 27th Avenue (there's a bike path most of the way down Saxon Drive for people who would prefer to bike instead of drive). Look for Sandpiper Drive, a small 2-lane road, right near some townhomes. There's generally a small sign for the park on the right hand side of Saxon Driver right before you get there. I know I've missed the turn-off if I pass the Coronado Elementary School on my left. Travel down Sandpiper Drive about 0.18 mile to the park entrance. Seclusion At Its Best at Indian River Lagoon Park
Indian River Lagoon Park is a relatively new park located on the beachside in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. It was just opened in the summer of 2007. The park is contained in just under 200 secluded acres of native Florida hammock. There are all sorts of indigenous plant and tree species to be found here. I like to come here to walk. There are nice flat trails for either walking or bicycling. The trails are either concrete paved or stabilized dirt/shell. The park has a covered pavilion with tables, a water fountain and restrooms, making it convenient to relax after some brisk exercise. There is a fishing dock and an observation deck which overlooks Brown's Bay. This is a good, quite place to canoe or kayak. I've yet to bring my kayak down here, but there is a place to launch it when I do. There are also spaces for parking vehicles when I drive my car to the park.
