Houses of Parliament
Houses of Parliament are located at the Parliament square (to get there take tube to Westminster). Houses of Parliament date back to 11th century however since then the only part that was left intact is the Westminster Hall. Even though it was planned to be a Royal residence it became the seat of the government in 16th century. Fire of 1834 destroyed most of Houses of Parliament and all that was left was the Westminster Hall so the rest of the Parliament had to be rebuilt. It was done in Gothic style and it was then that another most famous sight of London was built – Big Ben. There is the House of Commons and the House of Lords and while MPs in the House of Commons are elected, the MPs in the House of Lords are not (they used to be hereditary peers, meaning the seat was passed on from generation to generation, but nowadays they are nominated life peers). All in all even if you do not go in for a visit, you cant miss Houses of Parliament on your sightseeing tour. [more] |
