After arriving to London we decided to go right away to our hotel... which was this really cool hostel called Generator... our first impression was really poor... the hostel from outside looks really bad but after we entered the place seemed alive... lots of young people talking, walking, drinking coffee... I really liked the environment.
We checked in with one of the receptionists and she told us that the hostel didn't have any hot water (which is a must for me and my and Eliza) she told us that she could hold our reservations and we could go out and check other hotels or to stay and just be satisfied with what we had... we decided for the first option... the problem was that she didnt want to give back our deposit, she said that we could stay if we wanted but either way she wouldnt give us back any money... I really didnt like that.
Apart from that the hostel seems really nice and if it had all the services they claimed they had, then I am sure I would have spent my holidays there. [more ]
Before our last trip to London, we had booked a room at the Generator Hostel. Their pictures and attractive description convinced us, as well as the low room rates. So we got at the hostel at about 9am, even though the check-in times was 14:00(pretty late, right?). We wanted to make sure everything was ok and to see whether we could leave our luggage at the reception. It was pretty difficult to find the hostel, as we probably walked for at least 30min from the King's Cross Station. The building looks creepy, old and very dirty from the outside. Even bigger was our surprise when we walked in and the receptionist told us that there was no hot water in the whole hostel and that they would not give us a discount. There were indeed many people there and all seemed very unpleased with the hostel. [more ]
The Generator Hostel, Kings Cross, London
The Generator Hostel is an exprience to say the least. Firstly it's a little hard to find, especially if you forget to bring the directions with you - oops! My stay was over the Halloween weekend, and on arrival I was supriesed tofind that nearly all the young guests were wandering around in costume. Many of the guests were foreign, I being English was simply staying there for a cheap bed for the night with friends! The Generator is huge, loads of floors and loads of rooms. It is of course super cheap, which is a bonus for young travellers or those on a budget.
The room was tiny, two bunkbeds, two lockers and a sink. Fine for our purposes but not much room for four adults to get ready for a night out! Toilets and bathrooms all seemed fine and the other residents were friendly.
The bar was hilarious, filled with people dressed in costume, I felt like I had retruned to freshers week at University! The music was pure cheesy dance music and pop, this was quite funny and the last thing I'd normally listen to, but the atmosphere was fun. The toilets were a million miles and stair cases away from the bar - not good for the disabled. Drinks in the bar were extremely cheap, especially compared to all other London bars. THis was of course well recieved and we got well and truly 'tipsy' on the cheapo drinks before leaving.
Needless to say breakfast the next morning was not consumed, it looked OK, a bit bland, toast, cereal, tea, coffee, juice etc, but for the price you can't complain.
The hostel is close to main bus routes, Kings Cross and St Pancras international - all in walking distance. Excellent location for city or for getting back to the continent on the newly installed Eurostar station at St Pancras! [more ]
