There are so many ways and means of transportation to get you to the concentration camps. What people might not know is that there are three of them: Auschwitz, Birkenau, and Buna Werke or Monowitz. I only had the heart to visit the first. It was enough for one year. Certainly most tourists visiting have a general idea about the camps but there’s so much to read and to see. There is also time for reflection if you take the trip on foot around camp. Not to exaggerate too much, I felt bizarre going there alone. I managed to spot some of the places I read about in books. Also you feel a bit ashamed of calling yourself human, when you know that others like you or me did this. Auschwitz is a must while in Krakow. [more] |

Auschwitz Birkenau Camps
Auschwitz concentration camp in southern Poland can be visited in a long day from Kraków either by car or on public transport (take the train from Kraków to Oświęcim and then a bus asking to go to the “museum”). It will take the full day just to tour the Auschwitz camp itself, which serves as a museum with various displays of the possessions plundered from the prisoners and one moving room of photos of camp victims giving you an appreciation of the scale of the horrors committed there. If you’ve time however take two days and also visit the neighbouring camp at Birkenau which has been preserved to show what life in the camps was like. [more] |
