Koronet
Ask anyone in Morningside Heights who remotely resembles an Ivy League student where you can get a slice, and they'll point you to their fifth food group, Koronet Pizzeria (2848 Broadway between 110th and 111th Streets). Firstly, let me clarify that if you're visiting/spending time in/moving to New York for the first time, getting a New York slice, folding it, and eating it while balanced over a white paper plate is a rite of passage. You'll see everyone from the physics major between classes to the CEO between meetings to the actress between rehearsals grabbing a slice and doing the eat-and-walk. It's our ultimate fast food, and we take pride in a really good pie. That being said, the wrong slice of pizza can kill the combination of dough, tomato sauce, and mozzarella cheese for quite some time. Fortunately, this isn't a pitfall Koronet falls into. Many have reason to believe the pizzeria of choice for Barnard and Columbia students (not to mention the Manhattan School of Music and Jewish Theological Seminary a few blocks north, who have been known to make the ten-to-fifteen block commute) laces their slices with crack. While there's nothing illegal about their ingredients, it feels almost like a forbidden indulgence. But that's not the best part about Koronet. The best part, as with many things in life, is its size. A typical Koronet slice is roughly the size of two (or even three) slices of regular pizza. One slice is almost a personal pan-pie that you'd get in other restaurants or in the freezer section. The plate is almost an afterthought, as most of the slice will be drooping off the edges. What's more, one slice of their original cheese will set you back less than $3.00. So if you're strapped for cash or in a hurry or looking to make that leap into the New York pizza-mongering crowd, take the 1 up to 110th Street. It's that good to warrant its own commute. [more] |
