The Greenery, Islington
The Greenery at 5 Cowcross street was the runner-up in the Vegetarian Society’s Best Vegetarian Restaurants Award 2003. I’m not exaggerating when I say it’s one of London’s best vego restaurants. This vegetarian eatery is close to Farringdon tube station and just three minutes walk from Barbican LU in East London.
The first time I saw the Greenery, a cold February day in 2006, at least ten persons waited in line on the sidewalk outside the front door. Despite the long queue and the chilly weather, I decided to lunch here. Luckily, I didn’t need to wait long. The Greenery’s staff works efficiently and within five minutes, I could step inside and read the menu. Their menu include pies, jacked potatoes, pasta, salads, pizza, quiches and soups.
I like their juice Greenery Cleanser with carrot, apple, pineapple and lemon. My favourite food dish is the tasty vegetable lasagne. The flavourful salad with chickpeas, beans and spices wasn't bad either. The portions are generous and inexpensive. If you come here during the lunch peak, don’t get put off by the queue or the small size of the place. A lot of people working in the city order take-away and you can usually find a free stool by the window countertops.
The Greenery opens at 7am and closes at 5pm, mornings and afternoons are calmer. For breakfast, try scrambled eggs on toast and choose from their selection of muesli. If you're into smoothies, order their delicious blueberry blend. [more ]
