Grace Cathedral
The Grace Cathedral is one of San Francisco’s oldest and best known cathedrals. It is the daughter of the Grace Church that was built during the California Gold Rush of 1849. The original Grace Cathedral was destroyed by fire during the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. In 1928, reconstruction began on what is today the Grace Cathedral. It is located on California Street, not only is it the home to a faithful and lively congregation, it is also a place where many tourists come to worship on Sunday mornings. The Grace Cathedral is involved in many different ministries throughout San Francisco. Their jail ministry is one of the best known ministries in California. The Word of God is taught to inmates of the San Francisco jails and prisons. In addition to the jail ministry, they also hold death penalty prayer vigils and a food bank for the hungry or homeless people of the Bay area. Grace Cathedral also has a very good education program. There are many different adult education and children educational programs available. There are also classes for people in every area of their spiritual journey. The courses are taught by Grace Cathedral clergy and by outside lay people. The Grace Cathedral has beautiful architecture. Its front doors are known as the Gates of Paradise and are very large Ghiberti doors. The inside is beautifully decorated with large and small stain glass windows and medieval and contemporary furniture. The décor is absolutely breathtaking.
