Irish Museum of Modern Art - FREE!
On a cloudy, rainy Dublin day, we headed to the Irish Museum of Modern Art. One big bonus is that it's free admission. The museum is closed on Mondays and open from around 10:00am to 5:30pm the rest of the week (Sundays it's open at noon). There are a number of galleries and floors, so get a map when you get there. There's all sorts of stuff from paintings to sculpture and more. My favourite (as it is at any modern art museum) was the Monet. We ate in the museum diner, which I usually never do because I feel like they are always overpriced, but it wasn't that bad. There were families and other tourists snacking, but it was not overly crowded; there was room for everyone to sit. There is a nice bookstore/gift shop in the museum with a good selection of items. Irish Museum of Modern Art is located at Royal Hospital, Military Road, Kilmainham (Dublin 8). Irish Museum of Modern Art is located in the building that once was a Royal Hospital and the building itself dates back to 17th century (take a look around, there are medieval burial grounds, as well as a formal garden). The collection housed inside on the other hand it is said to be the best of its kind in Ireland when it comes to modern art pieces collected and the way they are presented. You can find cutting edge Irish and international artists in the permanent collection and the temporary collections that change over the year. Opening hours are Tue to Sat from 10:00am until 5:30pm; Wed from 10:30am until 5:30pm. Sun and holidays from noon until 5:30pm. Price of admission is free. [more] |
