Green Hostel, Botafogo

 stars
Botafogo's not the most famous neighbourhood in Rio, but there are plenty of reasons to stay there - not least because the hostels are a darned sight cheaper than those in Ipanema and Copacabana. Green Hostel is in a really nice old colonial building and the decor's cool - a nice bar, and loads of hammocks to lounge about in. The breakfast was rubbish when I was there, but to be fair it had only just opened and maybe they've improved things a little now...the dorms are pretty big and light, and there are two double rooms - ask for the one with the little balcony. Good budget accomodation in Botafogo

 stars
While most visitors to Rio head straight for the tourist hotspots of Copacabana and Ipanema, if you´re on a tight budget then one of the best places to stay is Botafogo. I stayed for a few nights in the Green Hostel, which is a really nice old colonial building, and has small dorms and private rooms, although bathrooms are shared. We had a private room, which was a bit more expensive than the dorms, but still only around half the price of a dorm bed in Ipanema. The room was really nice and light, with a wooden shutters opening onto a cute little balcony. The hostel had only just opened when I stayed there last year, so there was some work going on which made it a bit noisy, but the decor and the overall appearance of the place couldn´t be faulted. There´sa DVD lounge, and lots of comfy hammocks to relax in. My one grumble was the breakfast - poor by Brazilian standards, with just a few pieces of bread and some sweaty cheese slices..other than that though, great value for money. [more ]
