Spanish Arch
When you say Galway you say Spanish Arch. Every tourist has to go on the banks of river Corrib to see the Arch and the remains of the famous city walls. In fact the name Spanish Arch has no practical foundation, because there is no proven evidence that the Spanish in Galway had anything to do with the building of the Arch. It was built in the 16th century on the site called The Head of the Wall and its original name was The Blind Arch. A funny thing to be mentioned: one of the remained ancient walls is incorporated into a Mall near the Eyre Square. [more] |

Spanish Arch
The Spanish Arch is said to be a definite must when you visit Galway. We went to visit it too, but the most interesting part about the Arch is actually the history it is linked to. The arch is just a part of a very old fortress built to protect the ships. The area around it is really lovely. It seems to be one of the most popular areas in Galway, because there are always people there hanging out. There are also several bars and restaurants, which we didn’t visit because they looked kind of fancy to us. But the Arch is nice and worth visiting if you have plenty of time at your disposal.
