The Blue Elephant, Portomaso
In the modern complex that is Portomaso, you can find The Blue Elephant - a Thai restaurant of rather self-conscious and precious elegance that is, nevertheless, great fun. There's a little stream running through the centre of the restaurant, which you can cross via a small wooden bridge. A Thai-style hut separates privacy-loving diners from the hoi polloi. Greenery is draped and hung over anything that stands still long enough, so be careful when queueing for the loos (which are lovely!) But under all of this is a very good Thai restaurant, with well-cooked cuisine presented promptly, and with quiet friendliness. There's nothing particularly remarkable on the menu, with old favourites making up tthe bulk of it, but if you want exciting cuisine, I wouldn't recommend Malta anyway (unless you're someone who thinks rabbit is a thrill a minute). I had a very tasty green curry, jasmine rice and pad thai - and had absolutely no complaints. I'd recommend The Blue Elephant for a bit of an extravagance, but at around £30 a head for 3 courses, it's not exactly bank-breaking and it really is a fun place to eat. [more] |
