John's Grill, San Francisco

John's Grill, San Francisco

John's Grill is one of the oldest and most famous eating establishments in San Francisco. Opened in 1908, it is a great place to spot local, national, and international celebrities as they rip into some extremely tasty food. Their photos adorn the walls, and the restaurant was also the setting for the book The Maltese Falcon, by Dashiell Hammett.
The interior of the restaurant is cramped and small, and you tend to fall over tables when you try to walk to the toilets, and wipe out people's meals when you take your coat off. But the food is excellent, and they specialise in steaks, fresh seafood, salads, and pastas. I can whole heartedly recommend the Chef's Special Red Snapper, which is topped with shrimp, crab, and lemon cream for $25. Most meals at John's Grill cost between $20 and $30.
The restaurant is located on Ellis Street, and it would be best to make a reservation. [more ]
