The Australian Open
I was lucky enough to be visiting Melbourne while the Australian Open was on and had managed to get ground passes to the tournament. This coincided with a major heat wave in the city!
Having arrived at Melbourne Park, we found ourselves seats half way through a match on an outdoor court, but were soon informed that all play had been cancelled due to the extreme heat.
The rest of the day was spent sitting on the floor inside the Rod Laver Arena, desperately trying to keep cool. Just as we had decided to give up and head home, a match on centre court finished and the spectators came streaming out. Centre Court had a closed roof and air con, so play was continuing. We must have been looking pretty pathetic at the point, as a group of people approached us and offered us their corporate tickets for the final match. The tennis was brilliant and the atmosphere buzzing, but I have to confess to being more grateful for the air con!
Melbourne hosts quite a few major sporting events, so it may be worth investigating what´s on before you go. [more]
