Old Jaffa Hostel
There are many accommodations for the traveler in Tel Aviv-Yafo but to have a look at the inexpensive side, try one of the many Hostels in the area. My favourite in this city is the Old Jaffa Hostel. Rooms vary from dormitory style to private and are very affordable. My first few nights in Yafo were spent in a private room at a cost of 160 NIS per night (about $38 U.S.) A dorm style room is around $14 U.S.
The building that houses the Hostel is a triangular 3 story with balconies, a finished roof complete with kitchen and many years of history. On the main level is a common room with free wireless and a few computers should you require. The walls are adorned with maps of the city, historical facts and a wall of photos taken over many years and dedicated to the people who met at this very rustic Hostel. “Glenn (Australia) and Majenka (Holland) met here and were married on the roof, 19 August 1998” as an example.
As for location, you will not find this neighborhood on most maps. Jaffa is a very diverse area and home to Jews, Arabs, Christians and more. The Hostel is right in the heart of the “flea market” section. From any of the many balconies you can watch people below playing backgammon, browsing the shops, trading and eating. For countless blocks in each direction there are shops selling everything from carpets to food, nargila (hookah) to furniture. To the immediate west is the clock tower that serves as a sort of navigational point for most tourists. A five minute walk from the Old Jaffa Hostel will take you straight to one of the cities several beaches. Buses into the city are a few blocks to the north on Jerusalem Avenue.
With two kitchens, laundry facilities, a great staff and a very welcoming feel overall, the Old Jaffa Hostel is a fabulous bargain and a fun place to stay when in Tel Aviv-Yafo. Reception is closed during Shabbes expect for a few hours during Saturday. Check-out is noon each day.
