Smallest statue in Stockholm

 stars
The smallest statue in Stockholm can be found in Gamla Stan. Statue is made of iron and is a small boy that's less than one foot tall. It's in a courtyard near the Royal Palace and behind the Finnish church. Legend has it (or so we were told!) that if you flip a coin onto the statue and it stays there without bouncing off, you'll have good luck. If that doesn't work, rubbing his head is supposed to do the same. That's why you'll see coins around the statue and the top of his head has been rubbed shiny.

In the winter, someone will knit, crochet or sew the little iron boy a scarf and a cap. It's a unique and fun thing to see, and everyone can use some good luck! [more ]

Beautiful Old Town

 stars
Gamla Stan, or Old Town, is the historical and literal center of Stockholm. Inevitably there are an overwhelming number of tourists there (and all that accompanies tourists - including loads of trinket shops), there is so much intense history and excitement there.

The streets are narrow and it's almost like a maze. A map, or a keen sense of direction, are helpful if you want to get places in a hurry. But part of the charm of the area is being able to relax and wander the streets without much care to the time or exactly where you are.

The cathedral and Royal Palace are in Gamla Stan along with loads of high quality restaurants and cafes. The houses are close together and most of the buildings are built in the baroque style.

The views from the edges of the island across the water are stunning. The hotels are very expensive in this area, but there are plenty of places on neighboring islands that aren't far away. Though, if you're anything like me, you'll wish that you could stay there forever!

The streets can get busy and crowded, but just relax and enjoy the atmosphere. There is a subway station in Gamla Stan, conveniently named Gamla Stan, that is only one stop away from T-Centralen. It's on the red and green lines and is right in the middle of the action of Old Town. [more ]

Gamla Stan

To experience the old life in Stockholm head over to Gamla Stan. This old center of Stockholm is also located on an island. Though I really enjoyed the old parts of the city like churches and shops, I didn't prefer the massive amounts of tourists who come and ships and over run the place. There seemed to be no escape from them. This was true until I found a quiet safe haven over in Prastgatan. This area is much more devoid of tourists and will give you some peace and quiet and allow to see what normal life here is like.

Overall any place in the Gamla Stan is nice to walk by. The streets here are narrow and cobbled and have a very unique old feel to the whole place. Finding some souvenirs can be easily done by going to the main street called Vasterlanggatan. Here I was able to buy a few postcards and brandy glasses for my friends and family back home. They have T shirts but they usually ran a bit too expensive, some costing as much as 15 dollars per shirt. [more ]
