Ollie's
There are four Ollie's in New York, each of them with their own distinct personality and food style. However, walk into any of their locations (2957 Broadway at 116th Street, 2315 Broadway at 84th Street, 1991 Broadway between 67th and 68th Streets, or 411 W 42nd Street at 9th Avenue) and you'll get consistently good Chinese food at one of the few restaurants that all New Yorkers can agree on. A disclaimer first; nine times out of ten you can expect a rude waiter here. In the years that I've dined at, ordered from, or picked up takeout from each of these locations, I've come away with waitresses yelling at me over indecision, changing to brown rice, rolling their eyes at the size of my order ("Too small!" one of them shouted once when I went to pick up a carton of rice. "You come back when you want real order!"), and haggling over….well, everything. That being said, they don't argue your tips (although I generally tip well, I can imagine leaving them less than 10% would lead to an unhappy experience), they get you the correct food, and get it to you in a timely manner. It's part of a game with the staffs at Ollie's, and every New Yorker will tell you their Ollie's story. If anything, it's something to laugh about afterwards. What's interesting is the different way in which some dishes are cooked depending on what Ollie's you're at. This applies especially to the chicken and the methods in which they bread it. Rest assured, every version I've tried of sweet and sour chicken is delicious (although my personal favorite is the 42nd Street location). The atmosphere is great as well. While New York does not lack for cheap Chinese food, each Ollie's has a more upscale ambiance (without affecting their prices). The 67th Street location has beautiful terra cotta soldiers, the 116th Street location is a very neighborhood-hangout place, the 84th Street has intimate lighting, and the 42nd Street locale is always busy and bustling with pre-theatre diners. Ollie's is as much a New York rite of passage as eating your pizza on the fold. And you can even work out your New York attitude muscle with the staff. [more] |
