St. Mark's Church

 stars
We stumbled upon this church walking around Gradec. Gradec was once declared a free city with its own walls to protect itself and is a nice area to explore on foot. You can still see one of the old city gates, called the Stone Gate, which is also famous for a painting of the Virgin Mary that survived a devastating fire. If you carry on through the gate you eventually end up in the square with St. Mark´s Church.
The church was such an unusual sight when we first saw it. The roof had these beautiful coloured tiles which makes up the coat of arms of Zagreb and also the Triunine Kingdom of Croatia, Slavonia and Dalmatia. Unfortunately we didn´t get to look inside because it only opens a couple of times a day for mass, but it´s worth a visit just to see the roof. [more]

Saint Mark church

Crkva Svetog Marka is one of the oldest churches in Zagreb and dates back all the way to 13th century, although the church as it looks today was designed in 14th and 15th century. It is one of the sights in Zagreb's old upper part of the town you simply can not miss. The same square is the home to Prime Minister on one side and Croatian parliament on the other. In the inside of the church there are 3 altars (although there were 8 in 15th century and 12 in the 17th century) and it is 35 meters in length and 15 and a half meters in width. One of the Croatia's most renowned artists Ivan Mestrovic worked on interior design of the church. The reason why this monument is simply unmissable is because on the northwest side of the roof there is a crest of Zagreb and a crest of the former Kingdom of Croatia, Slavonia and Dalmatia. The bell tower has suffered earthquakes and fires and always it has been rebuilt and restored to its former glory. The bells that are used today date back to 1706. If you do go on a walk about tour of the upper part of the town, Crkva Svetog Marka is one sight you can not miss even if you wanted too as its colorful roof and one of the landmarks of Zagreb can be seen from afar.
