Camp Alta, Kiruna area
Camp Alta is the accommodation very close to Kiruna city (15 km) and to Kiruna Airport. It is situated on a beautiful lake Altajärvi. We've stayed there in winter, in January, so lake was frozen but still the surroundings looked very beautiful: the lake and the forest were covered with bright white snow. There was the feeling of untouched nature which, I think adds some adventure flavor to the experience. The camp is basically consisting of several cabins (small houses) standing on very good distance from each other, so people do not disturb the neighbors, and one common sauna building. We had a cabin for 5 people. There was a kitchen and a room. In the room there were sleeping 4 people: two on unfoldable sofa and two on the bunk bed. The room looks quite nice. The 5th person was sleeping in the fully equipped kitchen on the sofa. All the areas are comfortable and warm (which is important for minus 50C degrees in winter). Electrical radiators were turned on in advance before we arrived, so the building was warmed up for us. The toilet and the shower were not very comfortable, but we have managed to use them. There is a limited amount of the hot water (so the next person has to wait until the heater will again heat the water). The toilet was cold "dry", so all the flushing you do yourself with a water. This is some kind of bio technology. We didn't really care that much, because it was in the middle of wilderness and we cam there to experience not the civilization but the opposite (with some basic comfort of course). Sauna was a good relaxation after winter day activities. It takes quite some time to prepare but then you can totally enjoy it. The owner of the place is a really nice man. He offers some tours .We have tried guided Snow mobile tour to Ice hotel. Ir was totally worth it!!! Some people also really recommended the Dog sledge tour (I've done it in Finland so didn't want to repeat). Special cold proof clothes is provided for for all the outdoors activities and included in their price. After the Ice hotel tour the camp owner cooked the deer on the outdoor fire for us. It was very good!!!!! http://www.campalta.net/eng_index.htm [more] |
