HI - on Amsterdam.....dingy rooms, nice common areas
I spent a week at the Hostelling International hostel in New York City in February of 2008, the one on Amsterdam Street.
The hostel is in a great location on Manhattan Island and there is no shortage of nearby services whatsoever. One mistake that I made when trying to get to the hostel from the La Guardia airport is that I paid for a shared cab which cost me $40 USD (the cab driver increased the price as we got closer) when I could have safely used public transit.
In terms of hostel features, there were nice, new, flatscreen televisions, pay as you go computers, a store, newly renovated kitchens, and a large TV room. The dorm rooms were very dingy and in need of renovation, but nonetheless they had lockers and were acceptable.
Staff were polite except for one fellow who didn't like me for some reason. Even though I swiped my card to get in to the common areas, he asked me for my receipt. I pointed out that I had a card and he said anyone could have a card!
The best feature of this hostel might be that it is busy, which will enable you to make loads of friends, especially since they provide some free tours. [more ]
Hostelling International New York
If you travel on a budget and don’t mind sharing rooms with other travelers, hostel is a great choice. Hostelling International New York is located at 891 Amsterdam Avenue on the Upper West Side only three blocks from Central Park and one block from Broadway Avenue. It’s the largest hostel in New York and they offer comfortable and spacious rooms. We slept in a room with six bunk beds and all twelve beds were taken during our two nights stay. We had a room for girls only, but the hostel has mixed rooms and double rooms as well.
Hostelling International is a very popular hostel. When we came, about twenty to thirty people were before us in the line to the luggage room. The day we checked out, around ten people waited in line to the reception to book a room. If you can, get here early. Check-in time was quite late, at 2pm, but fortunately we could leave our backpacks in the luggage room. This hostel had better facilities than any other hostel we stayed at, and the nice outdoor terrace and their patio and garden which is Manhattan’s largest private green space were a big plus. In the morning, I did my daily yoga in the garden.
Breakfast is included in the price and served in café just next to the common room. The staff is very friendly and helpful. I really recommend this hostel. [more ]
