Esztergom Basilica
The Esztergom Basilica is definitely the greatest church in Hungary, and also one of the biggest in Central Europe. It is on the top of a high hill just beside the river bank of the Danube and can be seen from many kilometers away. It was built in the mid-19 Century on the place where once the cathedral of the first Hungarian archbishops has been. The big square in front of the Basilica helps the visitor to perceive its real size. I was particularly impressed by the size of the columns of the facade - I have never seen bigger columns in my life. The interior is also very magnificent, decorated mainly with 3 enormous paintings. In summer months one can climb up to the Dome for a nice view towards the Danube, but I didn't have that chance, being there in February. [more] |
