Peace Memorial Park - Memorial Cenotaph
The Memorial Cenotaph is situated between the statue and the museum and was designed by the famous Japanese architect Kenzo Tange (who also designed the Tokyo Metropolitan Government offices in Shinjuku). Its shaped like a figurine clay saddle, found in ancient tombs and shelters a stone chest, which in turn holds the names of all of those killed by the bomb. An inscription, written in Japanese, translates into the the hopeful phrase, "Repose ye in Peace, for the error shall not be repeated." As I stood in front of the cenotaph, I had a view through the hollow arch of the Peace Flame and the A-Bomb Dome and it is said, that the Peace Flame will continue to burn until all atomic weapons vanish from the face of the earth and nuclear war is no longer a threat to humanity. Wise words. [more] |
